Does Tongkat Ali Actually Raise Testosterone? What the Studies Show

The honest version: in the human trials we have, tongkat ali is associated with higher testosterone in men. The effect is real but modest, it shows up over weeks rather than days, and it depends heavily on which extract and dose you actually took. That last part is where most products quietly fall down.

What the 2022 meta-analysis found

The strongest evidence to date is a 2022 meta-analysis that pooled five randomized controlled trials. Across those trials, men taking tongkat ali showed higher total testosterone than men taking placebo. A meta-analysis matters because it is not one small study that got lucky. It is several studies pointing the same direction, which is about as good as botanical evidence gets.

Read carefully, though, and the word doing the heavy lifting is modest. Even friendly researchers say no supplement reliably moves testosterone in every man, and the gains, where they happen, are measured rather than dramatic. Anyone showing you a screenshot of a number leaping hundreds of points is selling you a screenshot.

Why the dose and the extract matter

Tongkat ali is a root. How it is extracted and standardized changes what you get. The trials used defined doses, often in the 100 to 600 mg range, of characterized extracts. A generic tongkat powder at an unnamed dose is not the same product as the one in the study, even if the label says the same two words.

The Daily uses LJ100, a branded, standardized tongkat ali extract, at 600 mg. We chose the branded extract because it is the one with published human data, and we chose the top of the studied range and then printed the number on the front. If a competitor buries tongkat inside a 'proprietary blend (500 mg)', you cannot tell whether you are getting a studied dose or a sprinkle. Here is how that trick works.

What tongkat ali does not do

It does not work in hours. It is not a replacement for sleep, training, or fixing a real deficiency. And it is not TRT. If your levels are clinically low, a supplement supports the system you have rather than replacing your hormones, which is a different job entirely. We wrote that comparison out in natural support vs TRT.

Straight answers

How much tongkat ali should I take?

The studied doses cluster from about 100 to 600 mg of a standardized extract. The Daily uses 600 mg of LJ100. More is not automatically better with this root, and cycling is worth understanding, which we cover in the timeline piece.

How long until it does anything?

Most tongkat trials run 8 to 12 weeks. Judge it at the study window, not at day 30. That is the single most common reason men quit too early.

Is tongkat ali safe to take daily?

The trial safety data is reassuring at studied doses, and there are no stimulants involved. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, ask your doctor first.

The Daily puts LJ100 tongkat ali at 600 mg on the front of the tin, next to nine other actives at their studied doses. See the full panel.
